Christina Urso-Cale
founder, secretary
Christina has had a lifelong love of animals, particularly horses and dogs. She spent her childhood at the local stables learning how to care for and ride horses, and has since gone on to own two of her own. She ran a pet minding business for 7 years, looking after domestic pets and farm animals alongside a small team of staff. Christina was founder and President of the Australian Equine Welfare Association, and instigated writing the Tasmanian Equine Welfare Guidelines. They became formally annexed as part of the Tasmanian Animal Welfare Act in 2009. She was also actively involved with the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and with the Australian Government’s ‘Australian Animal Welfare Strategy’ initiative.
Christina’s passion for animal welfare led her to volunteering in Tanzania in 2018, where she fell in love with the stunning landscapes, wildlife and beautiful people. She met Evarest Maguo working on the animal welfare project and began learning more about the animal welfare issues being faced in Tanzania. Christina co-founded PAWS with Evarest , returning to Africa in September 2019 to attend the African Network for Animal Welfare Conference in Ethiopia, volunteer on a Big Cat research project in the Masai Mara of Kenya, and launch PAWS as a charity back in Tanzania. She climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and raised over $4,500 AUD to set up the organisation. She believes that education is the key to sustainably improving the lives of animals and of the people around them.
