Animal Welfare Matters.
About Us
The Protection of Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) - Tanzania has been created by a passionate vet based in Arusha, Tanzania; and animal welfare volunteer, Christina Urso-Cale. We aim to improve the lives of domestic, farm and working animals in Tanzania through education, advocacy, and on-ground clinics & workshops.
70 million
There are almost 70 million farm animals in Tanzania, including pigs, cows, goats and chickens.
99%
99% of these farm animals are owned by resource-poor farmers with little or no knowledge of appropriate animal welfare practices.
2.3 million
This is the estimated number of street dogs living in Tanzania. They scavenge for food, have no access to veterinary care, and they are often unvaccinated and breed indiscriminately - leading to increased populations.
When looking at these figures, it can be disheartening. There is much work to be done in Tanzania… but small steps can be made towards improving the problem - vets who are present on market days can inform farmers about correct care of farm animals. Spay and neuter clinics can help reduce the populations of street dogs and cats. Vaccination days can help reduce the contraction and transmission of rabies; and education can help improve welfare outcomes for future generations of animals.
Get Involved
PAWS is a new organisation. We have already run several vaccination clinics, but we have plans to do so much more. We are currently planning educational projects and more local workshops and clinics. Please help us make them a reality.
You can support our work with a regular or a one-off donation, or by volunteering to work with our partner vet Dr. Evarest Maguo in Arusha, Tanzania. This is a life changing experience that you will never forget!
